Our first competition of the 2026–27 season was judged by David Kissman, who gave members plenty of thoughtful and constructive feedback throughout the evening.

Our thanks to David for his careful judging, useful critique and practical advice on how we might strengthen our images.

Congratulations go to Philip, whose striking portrait Beautiful Old Age was selected as the overall winner.

Congratulations too to Ronnie, who received the award for Best New Member.

Four further images received the maximum score of 20:

The Winged Messenger — Rudolf
Last Stone Standing — Andy B
Pensive — Mike H
Palazzo Tetta — Karen S

It was a very enjoyable evening, with a general feeling that the judging was fair and consistent as well as constructive. David’s comments certainly gave us plenty to think about — and sparked some healthy discussion afterwards about judging, photography and what makes a successful competition image.

Thanks and congratulations to everyone who entered. Members can watch again via the usual recent zooms page (needs a password).

Catching up with last week

We also have a little catching up to do from last week’s members’ evening.

Philip showed five photographs capturing the colour, atmosphere and enjoyment of the recent Bling Dance Festival in Edinburgh, while Rudolf shared five images of Little People and Light Bulbs, made during our practical evening and inspired by David Gilliver’s recent presentation.

Rudolf also recommended Immersive by photographer Bill Ward, (a book exploring abstract and intentional camera movement photography of the sea and ocean.

Cheyne took us across the Atlantic to New York and Washington DC, sharing photographs from a journey visiting family and places important to his family history.

Davide introduced us to the fascinating world of stereoscopic photography, bringing along a selection of stereoscopes and photographs for members to try. He also highlighted two apps for anyone interested in experimenting with 3D imagery: Spatialify for iPhone, and scopi for iOS and Android.

Finally, Muriel brought the evening to a close with photographs from the 2026 World Sheepdog Trials in the Scottish Borders, where around 300 competitors from 34 countries came together to celebrate the extraordinary skill of the Border Collie.

Photographic kit looking for a new home

We also have a selection of photographic equipment available to members, thanks in part to some generously donated legacy items.

The plan is to give members the opportunity to take items away in return for a reasonable donation. A few additional pieces of equipment that are no longer used by the club will also be included.

The equipment will be on display on 10 November after the tea and coffee break, so members can have a browse and see whether anything might be useful.

The gallery below shows the equipment currently available. Items have been grouped for convenience and may be taken individually in return for a reasonable donation.

Coming up

The deadline for our next competition, Nature, is 27 October. Judging will take place on 10 November by members’ vote.

Our next meeting is on 20 October via Zoom, when Zaneta Threfall — “Zan’s Lens” — will take us to Costa Rica.
