The first meeting of our new season was a busy one, with plenty to catch up on after the summer and lots to look forward to over the months ahead.
Grace opened the evening by welcoming a few new members and remembering a couple of friends we have sadly lost. She then took us on a quick retrospective of the club’s summer outings.
It has been a particularly successful summer, with trips to Portobello, Gullane, Archerfield, Amisfield and several other locations. We were remarkably lucky with the weather on most of them, and they produced plenty of interesting photographs along the way.
Looking ahead
Attention then turned to the new season and a quick introduction — particularly useful for our newer members — to how things work at Haddington Camera Club.
There is a lot coming up. Members’ Nights give members the chance to show photographs, talk about a location or photographic book, or give a short presentation. There will also be practical evenings, guest speakers, competitions, a quiz and a scavenger hunt, as well as our Annual Exhibition, end-of-season prizes and opportunities to meet up with other local camera clubs.
We have five guest speakers lined up, covering subjects including Costa Rica, street photography and abstract photography, with plenty more besides. There are also around nine competitions during the season.
So, quite a lot to keep us busy!
Competitions — and signs
Mike gave us an overview of last season’s competitions and then changed direction completely with a short presentation of photographs of signs he had encountered.
Some were wonderfully amusing. A particular favourite was:
“Private Sign: Do Not Read.”
Sometimes the photograph is already there waiting for you.
Birds in Aviemore
Elaine rounded off the presentations with an update from a very successful club trip to Aviemore.
Accompanied by photographs from the trip, she showed us some of the wildlife the group had been able to photograph, including owls, eagles and peregrine falcons. It looked like an excellent trip — and certainly a productive one photographically.
And, in amongst all of this, there was plenty of good conversation, tea and biscuits.
A good start to the season.
